Over at America, Michael Baxter has written a highly provocative essay on John Courtney Murray and how he got it wrong. I do not concur in all of Baxter's analysis - his concern for the role of the state seems to me to be out-sized - but I think his refutation of Murray's take on the American founding and American exceptionalism is spot-on. In any event, Baxter's essay will create some fireworks, and that is a good thing.
