Political Stupidity and Shame

This morning's Washington Post reports that two African-American legislators in Virginia, both Democrats, are considering whether or not to support a GOP-backed redistricting plan that would cram more minority voters into fewer districts, making two districts more likely to elect a minority candidate, but making the eight surrounding districts less friendly to Democrats of any color. Undoubtedly, these two legislators in the lower house fancy their chances at gaining admission to the upper house in these two districts. Shame on them. This has been going on for some time in the South, as GOP redistricting plans garner the support of minority candidates, even though the net result is more Republicans elected. I seem to remember Dr. King saying something about judging on the content of character not the color of skin.
