Josh Eidelson, writing at the Nation, reports on the opening sessions of the AFL-CIO convention in Los Angeles. The idea of formally joining with other progressive groups is deeply worrisome, because some of those groups take positions of no particular significance for workers, and others take positions deeply hostile to many union members. This is a time to strengthen to core union message of fighting for workers' rights and better wages, not to dilute that message by becoming a card-carrying member of the amosphous left.
