This is from the arts calendar for the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal:
Vermont artist Janet McKenzie won the National Catholic Reporter's competition for a new image of Jesus in 1999 and has received wide attention - both positive and negative - for her paintings ever since.
McKenzie has devoted her life to creating paintings that celebrate humanity in an inclusive way, with a particular emphasis on African-Americans and women.
Her "Jesus of the People," which won the competition, and a dozen other works have just gone on view at the Haggerty Museum of Art at 13th and Clybourn streets on the Marquette University campus. The exhibit "Holiness and the Feminine Spirit" will be on view through Jan. 2.
