And the bracket goes tumbling down.
The weekend’s games at the men’s tournament were none too friendly to our bracket, with Gonzaga falling Saturday afternoon to Ohio State, and Saint Louis, Creighton and Georgetown – our pick among the Catholic schools to win it all – bowing out Sunday.
The only team still alive on our bracket and advancing to the Sweet 16 is the Marquette Golden Eagles. Xavier also made it through, though we did not pick them to do so.
On a brighter note, after the first round of the women’s tournament, six of the nine Catholic schools are still alive, and still standing in our bracket.
In notable games, St. John’s squeaked by Creighton in a first-round matchup of Catholic schools, winning 69-67, while St. Bonaventure required a comeback and overtime to knock out Florida Gulf Coast and their record-setting three-point shooting.
Also making it through to the second round of the tournament are DePaul, Georgetown, Gonzaga and Notre Dame.
No. 11 seed Gonzaga and no. 7 seed DePaul will play their respective games this evening, with the other four scheduled for Tuesday tip-offs.
Hopefully, once those games conclude and the tournament moves to its Sweet 16, our women’s bracket will look healthier than our men’s at the same stage.
