In March 2011, The New York Times ran a feature on the Pentagon's biggest boondoggles. It is based on a 2009 Government Accountability Office review of defense acquisition programs that found that two-thirds of them suffered cost overruns and delays and that generally they don't meet today's military needs. Cutting them would save about $50 billion a year. But none of them have been cut yet.
