In March 2011, The New York Times ran a feature on the Pentagon's biggest boondoggles. It is based on a 2009 Government Accountability Office review of defense acquisition programs that found that two-thirds of them suffered cost overruns and delays and that generally they don't meet today's military needs. Cutting them would save about $50 billion a year. But none of them have been cut yet.
I wrote about some of these systems for NCR Today during Lent in 2011. Below are links to those blogs.
- Vehicles that protect the troops
- F-35 fighter airplanes
- Global Information Grid
- Robots, drones, sensors, smart bombs and other types of artificial intelligence
- The Sea Fighter, a littoral combat ship
All these blogs are based on Scripture: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Luke 12:34).
