Breaking news: The Vatican has forced Cardinal McCarrick to step down from active ministry after an allegation of sexual abuse of a teenager from 47 years ago is found credible. It is likely the first time a cardinal is stepping down for sexual abusing a minor. This is a developing story, so follow NCR for updates.
Could a “Pope Francis” Catholic could run for office in the Democratic Party today and be elected, or run for a judicial seat and win? One panelist at Georgetown’s last panel in the “Faith and the Faithful in U.S. Politics” series doesn’t think so.
The outcry against the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from their parents who are seeking asylum continues:
- Protests around the country are planned for June 30;
- The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) of Texas has raised more than $5 million (about $4,000 every minute) over the past four days for a “Family Reunification Bond Fund” to pay for legal services and bond for immigrants detained at the border.
- More than 600 United Methodists have lodged a formal denominational complaint about Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who is Methodist, for his role in the policy.
- Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers didn’t hold back in this tweet: “THIS JUST IN: They’re not cages. They’re ‘chain-link rooms.’ UP NEXT: It’s not crucifixion. It’s just securely attaching somebody to wooden boards using sharp iron fasteners.”
Meanwhile, two hosts for EWTN shows have made it clear they support the gospel of Trump over the Gospel of Jesus. Michael Sean Winters was astounded when one asked a Catholic Relief Services official who runs a shelter in Mexico whether migrants fleeing persecution and violence see how they’re putting a burden on the U.S..
