Dominican-run Providence College in Rhode Island joins a growing number of Catholic colleges and universities that have reorganized diversity, equity and inclusion offices under the umbrella of mission and ministry.

Pope Leo XIV is speaking from a "very well-established tradition," in terms of just war theory, said a panelist in a recent Georgetown University discussion where participants were asked what it means to choose peace.

Catholic bishops, clergy, religious sisters, congressional representatives, political pundits and foreign heads of state were among those who condemned Trump's statements.

"Jesuit higher education has given me everything really in terms of a purpose in my life, my career and my vocation," said the new president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

Along with the pope and other Catholics left and right, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops blasted Trump's threat, urging him to "step back from the precipice of war and negotiate a just settlement for the sake of peace and before more lives are lost."

"Unfortunately, there is plenty of work to go around," said SNAP Executive Director Angela Walker. "They may be going in a different direction, but in the end, we're both on the same side. We want to help survivors."

"This is about protecting children and bringing justice to those who could never ever seek it all these years," said Rhode Island State Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee.

Every week, sometimes every day, a group of religious sisters and priests visit the imprisoned at Camp East Montana, an immigration detention center that resembles a sprawling tent city in the desert.

While spelling out the Catholic Church's conditions for a just war, Cardinal Robert McElroy said that the U.S. decision to go to war against Iran fails to meet that threshold in at least three requirements.

"If you don't think it's going to affect you because it hasn't affected you right now, well, it's only a matter of time before it hits close to home," attorney Imelda Maynard said in a recent interview with NCR.

Religious men and women in the borderland region accompany migrants on a daily basis in the federal courthouses and in immigration detention centers, seeking to provide solace, comfort and support.

Trump devoted a significant portion of his speech to his administration's hardline immigration policies, declaring that under his watch the United States has the "strongest and most secure border in American history by far."

St. John's University in Queens, New York, notified employees on Feb. 19 that it will no longer recognize the two unions that have represented faculty members at the Catholic university since 1970.

"People are staying much longer at the shelter, in some cases up to nine months," said Fr. Francisco Javier Bueno Guillén of the Ciudad Juárez Diocese, who serves as director general of a diocese-operated migrant shelter.

"The political crisis of our time is, at its root, a spiritual crisis," Baltimore Archbishop William Lori wrote, adding that the political atmosphere becomes "toxic" when souls become "untethered from the love that grounds them."

Two Catholic bishops are calling on President Donald Trump to apologize for posting a racist meme on social media that depicted former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes.

Ruben Garcia, the shelter's executive director, said the Trump administration's hardline immigration policies reflect a belief that all migrants are criminals.

Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington joined several interfaith leaders in the nation's capital in denouncing the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis as "murders."

"People are suffering, and the effects of that suffering will have an impact on our country too, for many years to come," Bishop Mark Seitz told NCR in an interview at his office in El Paso.
